TULANE ORTHOPAEDIC TRAUMA PROGRAM
The Tulane Orthopaedic Trauma Program is under the direction of Dr. Paul Gladden, M.D. , with the assistance of Drs. John A. “Chip” Davis, Ollie Edmunds, Kathleen Robertson, Charlie Billings, Jim Sammarco, Raoul Rodriguez, and Jacques Whitecloud.
Trauma care is provided at University Hospital and Tulane Medical Center. Both facilities have full time emergency rooms staffed with specialty trained physicians. Three to four orthopaedic residents are based at University Hospital providing the base team at this institution. The most critical traumatic injuries are cared for at University Hospital, where call coverage is shared every other night with the LSU Orthopaedic program. Cooperation between the two programs provides a good working relationship with a helpful attitude, so that the best care is provided to the patients. Two operative block days are provided weekly for use by the Tulane Orthopaedic service. An average of ten to twelve surgical trauma cases are done there weekly. A full day of clinic time for University Hospital is provided every Friday with the possibility of overflow clinics as needed. Call coverage at Tulane Medical Center is provided by the Tulane Orthopaedic department each day and night. Emergency cases are done as needed in a timely fashion. More elective care is referred to the appropriate staff member specializing in the area of treatment required. Elective cases are evaluated in clinic and scheduled for surgery in available time blocks for the attending. Pediatric trauma experience is provided at the new Tulane Pediatric emergency facility and at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. New orthopaedic pediatric faculty, as well as the addition of rotations at Children’s Hospital, will help enrich the orthopaedic pediatric trauma experience. The utilization of these three facilities provides a well rounded experience in orthopaedic trauma care.
